Sunday Snippet

Angela taught the lesson this week from the April 2010 General Conference address of President Henry B Eyring. "Help Them on Their Way Home".
She mentioned the usefulness of modern GPS systems in our cars that tell us "to turn around" when we have got off track to our destination. The Holy Ghost is like our GPS in helping us stay on track.
Angela read of when President Eyring's eldest son (not yet baptised) was lost one evening on his way home. something came to his memory and he knew he was supposed to pray, he left the road and found a place to kneel down. Two young people heard him crying and offered to help. He didn't know his address or phone number but he knew his name and they found the family name in the phone book. President Eyring was grateful that kind people had been placed along his way home and that he was taught to pray with faith that help would come when he was lost.

The programs for the children at church are designed to reinforce what is taught at home and to help children recognise the Holy Ghost.
The first eight years of life are protected from Satan's use of mists of darkness because of the atonement of Jesus Christ. Families have an advantage in these years to strengthen their childrens faith and testimony that they may be less likely to need rescue as teenagers.
The Duty to God program of Young Mens help young men know their priesthood responsibilities and Personal Progress of Young Womens help young women know of their divine nature and individual worth. The programs of the church help our youth to reach their potential and to set and attain goals.
The Word of Wisdom (Doctrine and Covenants 89) provides guidance on temporal salvation 89:2, on the proper use of alcohol (a cleanser)89:7 and tobacco (a veterinary medicine)89:8 hot drinks (tea and coffee)89:9 and flesh of beasts to be used in times of winter, cold and famine 89:12,13,15; and to eat all wholesome herbs and fruits in season with prudence and thanksgiving 89:10,11,16.
"We help God's children best by providing ways to build faith in Jesus Christ and His restored gospel when they are young. And then we must help rekindle that faith quickly before it dims as they wander off the path."
"So you and I can expect a nearly continuous opportunity to help travelers among God's children. The Saviour told us... 'Enter ye in at the strait gate, for wide is the gate, and broad is the way which leadeth to destruction, and many there be who go in thereat;
Because strait is the gate and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.'(3 Nephi 14:13,14)"
Angela said Children can be funneled into the straight gate by teaching correct principles. Heavenly Father loves them and they are loved by their families and to help them recognise the still small voice.
The broad gate is like a funnel and it gets narrower and narrower until we are caught in a snare.

In testimony meeting Andrew McGown read Psalm 124:7 "Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken and we are escaped."
