Sunday Snippet

This week the lesson was chapter 20 of the Gospel Principles manual, Baptism. Sister Andrea King taught us the difference between a principle and an ordinance, a gospel principle is a true belief and an ordinance is a ceremony. The first two principles of the gospel are faith in Jesus Christ, and repentance and the first ordinance is baptism. We must be baptised to become members of the Church of Jesus Christ. We must be baptised to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. We must be baptised to show our obedience. We must be baptised to enter the Celestial Kingdom.
There is only one correct mode of baptism and that is immersion by those with the proper authority. Baptism is not necessary before the age of accountability, 8 years old.
When we are baptised we make promises to do certain things and God promises to bless us in return. We covenant to
  1. Come into the fold of God.
  2. Bear one anothers burdens.
  3. Stand as a witness of God at all times and in all places.
  4. Serve God and keep His commandments.
God promises to
  1. Forgive our sins.
  2. Pour out His spirit more abundantly upon us.
  3. Give us daily guidance and the help of the Holy Ghost.
  4. Let us come forth in the First Resurrection.
  5. Give us eternal life.
Sue shared the experience of her baptism as a child in Utah. How on the first Saturday of the month all those who had turned eight, and maybe the converts as well, were baptised by their fathers or the missionaries. It was a collective meeting organised by the leaders of the church and one after the other the fathers and their children would reverently go into the waters and perform the baptismal ordinance. Baptisms used to be done this way in Glen Huon ward too.

Baptism is a new beginning with it we begin a new way of life. Alma 7:14-16
One of the great blessings of baptism is that it provides us with a new start on our way toward our eternal goal.
